Dubai’s Dh16-Billion Road Development Plan to Cut Traffic and Enhance Commutes for Millions

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) reports a significant rise in daytime traffic, with 3.5 million vehicles on its roads—an increase of 10% in registered vehicles over two years, outpacing the global average of 2-4%.

Despite this, Dubai maintains efficient travel times, averaging 12 minutes and 50 seconds for a 10 km trip in central areas, faster than cities like London and Berlin.

To address growing traffic and support the expanding population, Dubai’s Dh16-billion Main Roads Development Plan (2024-27) will introduce 22 key projects:

  • Latifa bint Hamdan Street: Expanding capacity for 16,000 vehicles per hour, cutting travel time by 15-20%.
  • Meydan Road: Serving one million residents, reducing travel time to just four minutes.
  • Al Mustaqbal Street: Enhancing capacity to 12,000 vehicles per hour and reducing travel time from eight to three minutes.
  • Trade Centre Roundabout: Adding five bridges to create free-flowing traffic, cutting delays from 12 minutes to 90 seconds.
  • Umm Suqeim and Al Qudra Streets: Expanding capacity to 12,600 vehicles per hour, decreasing travel time from 46 minutes to 11.
  • Al Fay and Al Safa Streets: These developments will further boost road capacity, benefiting hundreds of thousands of residents with significantly reduced travel times.

The plan aims to enhance Dubai’s infrastructure, making travel more efficient and accessible across the city for residents and visitors.
