Dubai’s new Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) will feature a comprehensive underground train system to minimize travel distances and enhance passenger convenience. According to Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, the journey between terminals will take approximately 20 minutes.
Speaking at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), Griffiths explained that due to the massive scale of the new Dh128-billion facility, walking long distances would not be practical. Instead, seated trains will be used to transport passengers efficiently across the airport.
The design is inspired by the concept of building eight smaller airports within one, offering a more intimate and manageable travel experience. Passengers could soon sit in lounges with glass canopies allowing them to view their aircraft, with AI-powered projections showing where their flight is heading — enhancing convenience and personalization.
On Tuesday, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum confirmed that construction contracts for the DWC are being awarded, and the airport is expected to be the largest in the world upon completion.
Over the next 10 years, all operations from Dubai International (DXB) will gradually transfer to DWC. This strategic shift will ease traffic congestion and enable a redevelopment of the DXB area, contributing to the city’s long-term infrastructure goals.
